Our bones

I’m perpetually in love. With pink skies. And orange skies. And raising the volume in my AirPods until the noise check turns red. Closing my eyes and letting shapes form behind my lids. Purple squiggles and cobalt blue spheres, and a piano man stroking black and white keys in an empty room, and psychedelic butterflies flying from an open crimson casket. Catching a glimpse of their wings, watching golden shimmers float in front of my eyes. Peering into the box and seeing you and me.

It always comes back to me,

and you.

And we’re floating on a lake, your head next to my head, our hair intertwining like the chords of old earphones in ripped blue jeans' pockets. Do you think we can count the number of fibres of our beings that beat to the same drum at this point?

They must be infinite by now.

I look into your eyes, and you look into mine, and it’s two pools reflecting each other. Mine from a tropical sea, yours from a lake surrounded by evergreens, like swimming in a natural pond and watching the soft amber glimmers of light through the algae. Seeing large bubbles enclose and escape your mouth as I make you laugh, pushing down on wet mossy ground to reach the surface again.

I pop my head out just enough for my nose to inhale, watching your greens with my blues between the wet locks of my brown hair. You part your chapped purple lips, and the clear water drips from your mouth to your chin and into the emerald around us.

Your eyes, my eyes,

your chin, my chin,

your hair, my hair,

your touch, my touch,

your hips, my hips,

your nose on my nose and my hand on your hand and your lips on my lips.

your bones are my bones,

our bones.

Our bones we didn’t see were made of glass, polished over and over again with every single stroke of the tip of your canari painted fingers on my back, and the licks of my raspy pink tongue on your ear.

Our bones getting thinner and thinner, slimmed by time and water and us and them until they bursted into too many shimmering fragments.

From our bones to glittering shattered glass to dust to mud to moss at the bottom of a lake reflecting the sky,

blue on green,

green on blue,

me,

and you.
